Margaret's Artist's Statement
My art doesn’t aim to change the world. It is made to give those in the world a little bit of joy. That includes me. My art often reflects my personal humor: absurdity and irony. Sometimes it’s that simple, but occasionally I aim to communicate something deeper. My art is rarely consistent. I often hear artists talking about how they are “exploring” a certain topic or theme; I usually get bored long before I get that far.
Much of my art is about the process. I crave working with my hands. I love to dig my fingers into my medium, to get the gunk under my fingernails and splattered in my hair. One of my favorite things is getting paint everywhere and wearing the evidence of my work throughout my day. Though sculpture feeds my soul, my go-to is usually watercolor, but that is more for convenience than anything. As for mediums, I have been known to use anything on hand, often mixing random supplies together to get the desired result. Among other things, I enjoy painting, I adore book arts and letterpress work, and ceramics is a new development that feeds my cravings. Art is not always about changing the world. Sometimes it’s about making this corner of the world that much better. Whether because of humor, beauty, or something else, for the moment that a viewer looks at my work, I want them to smile.

This ceramic piece is a self portrait of a sort. The fish represent my faith. The pointed ears are for all the times people have called me an elf for my fashion choices and height. The flower represents my love of flowers. The pearls represent my name, as Margaret means "Pearl."
